At Vespa Rhode Island, we highly recommend that all riders take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Safe Rider Course. This course is required for a Rhode Island motorcycle license, which is necessary for riding any scooters or motorcycles with engines greater than 50cc. Although not required for riders on 50cc bikes, these riders should take the course as well. You will learn a lot of stuff that will keep you safe when you ride, and much of it is not intuitive at all.
Ironstone Ventures offers the Basic Rider Safety Course in Seekonk, MA. The great thing about Ironstone Ventures is that they offer this training on scooters. Below is their schedule for “scooter school” for the rest of 2009. (They also have comprehensive motorcycle rider training courses.)

I am proud to cooperate with Vespa Providence/Providence Motorsports.
Ironstone Ventures has been serving the motorcycling community since 1982. The owner/operator, Joe Proia, has been riding since 1967. I have ridden throughout most of the US, Europe,South Africa, and New Zealand by motorcycle.
This year we have added scooters to our fleet of training bikes to meet the increasing popularity of scooters. Withthe help of Providence Motorsports, we have seen an increase of registrations for those considering or have bought scooters as a mode of transportation.
The curriculum we use is the same MSF Basic Rider course used for motorcycle training, which meets state (RI and MA) requirements for licensing. We can offer our scooters to use for training, but, if you have already purchased a scooter,we encourage you to bring your own.
